Tasks

Your group will work on one of the following four tasks. Each task involves internet research and various aspects you should cover during your work process. Please try to find as much as possible about each aspect and try to work in team. Each group member should have something to work on.

Group 1: Culture

Many people think Irish culture is characterised by folk music, ancient fairy tales, pubs and nightlife. But there might be many more aspects such as Irish literature and poetry and traditional celebrations like St. Patrick's Day. You should write about the following aspects:

  • Irish pub life and beer
  • Present an Irish fairy tale
  • Search for an Irish poet and write about his life and present one of his poems
  • Write about Irish folk music, music instruments and lyrics. Look for audio files!

  • Group 2: History

Dealing with Irish history is both an interesting and rewarding task since you may actually experience how Ireland turned into the country it is now. This process took a long time and needs some serious attention.

    Your tasks:

  • Write your own very brief history of Ireland. Each group member or more should deal with the following periods: Early Ireland, The Middle Ages, Early Modern Ireland and Modern Ireland. Please take in mind that your texts should not exceed more than two pages per person.
  • Alternatively you may write about a famous character of Irish history, for example: Michael Collins, Wolfe Tone, Parnell or Grace O'Malley

  • Group 3: Geography

Ireland is a rather small island which is approximately as big as the German Bundesland Bavaria. Apart from this there are four provinces in Ireland: Connaught, Ulster, Leinster and Munster.

    Your tasks:

  • Write texts about each province including information on major towns, historical sites and the landscape
  • Try to find a large map of Ireland and mark towns and sites mentioned in your texts

  • Group 4: Sports

Irish people like sports which are very different from other European sports such as soccer or tennis. You should find out more about the following Irish sports:

  • Rugby
  • Hurling
  • Gaelic Football

  • Write articles for this website about Irish sports. Include the basic rules, national leages, famous players and photos. The more information you add the better.
